6-hour CLINICAL SUPERVISION BEYOND THE BASICS Workshop 9 am to 4 pm (6 CEUs, designed to satisfy the AZBBHE requirement for 6 hours of Clinical Supervision training in subsequent licensure periods)

Through presentation, discussion, and problem solving of critical incidents, the following aspects of competency-based, empathically attuned clinical supervision will be identified and explored:

•    The role and responsibility of a clinical supervisor
•    The skill sets necessary to provide oversight and guidance to a supervisee who diagnoses, creates treatment plans, and treats clients
•    The concepts of supervision methods and techniques
•    Evaluation of a supervisee’s ability to plan and implement clinical assessment and treatment processes.
Please be prepared to discuss two challenging situations you’ve encountered as a supervisor.  In order to maintain confidentiality, please disguise all identifying information.  

Learning Objectives:
      
Participants will be able to
1.    Demonstrate effective supervisory roles and responsibilities.
2.    Describe the skill sets necessary to provide competent oversight and guidance.
3.    Summarize concepts of supervision methods and techniques.
4.    Apply appropriate evaluation and assessment measures to supervisees’ clinical and professional knowledge and skills.   

Robert Kafes, DCSW, ACSW, LCSW, BCD is a Board Certified Diplomate in Clinical Social Work with nearly fifty years experience.  He is in the private practice of psychotherapy, psychoanalysis, supervision, and consultation where he facilitates six different case consultation groups for psychotherapists and supervisors.  He’s been a clinical supervisor since 1973 in Tucson and in New York City for crisis, brief treatment, and the in-depth treatment of individual, couple, family, and group therapy for children, adolescents, and adults.   

In Tucson since 1988, Bob was director of mental health services at the Southern Arizona Center Against Sexual Assault; regional director, AZ Youth Advocate Program; senior therapist and founding director, Institute of Continuing Education for Human Service Professionals at Jewish Family and Children’s Service.  As a clinical educator, he conducts seminars in professional ethics, the business of private practice, vicarious traumatization and self-care, contemporary theories of psychoanalysis, and clinical supervision. 

Bob is the recipient of many awards including: “Outstanding Teacher” from the National Association of Social Workers, AZ; Governor Janet Napolitano/Attorney General Terry Goddard Award for Excellence as “Outstanding Sexual Assault Mental Health Professional;” the University of Arizona Health Sciences Center “Hero in Women’s Mental Health,” and the Branch 2 and state chapter “Lifetime Achievement Awards” from NASW.
