We will discuss the topic: Book discussionHillbilly Elegy, A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis by JD Vance

Karen Voyer-Caravona, MA, LMSW is a WICHE fidelity reviewer for the Arnold v Sarn project contracted with AHCCCS. Cherie Conte, LMSW is child and family systems of care project manager and works for AHCCCS. Karen and Cherie are Branch 1 Representatives for NASWAZ and Networking Mtg Co-Chairs.

Discussion of author Vance's perspective on social, regional, and class decline among poor white Americans in the Rust Belt and Appalachia. Vance tells his family story, including his mother's struggle to attain a place in the new middle class, along with her inability to escape the legacy of abuse, alcoholism, poverty and trauma so often characteristic in this region. In interviews subsequent to the 2016 presidential election, Vance theorizes how issues of generational poverty and social class bias exclude many in this group from assumed white privilege, which has been met with some degree of controversy. However, Vance has urged readers and policy makers to consider this perspective as a contributing factor to the results of the election, particularly in areas which previously support Democrats.

NASW Members and future-members are encouraged to attend. Please register for the event by clicking "register" above. This helps us with our planning efforts. If you are an NASW member, please sign in prior to registration.
