DESCRIPTION:

The US is experiencing an 800% increase in the number of people asking for asylum. Who are asylum seekers? Where are they coming from and why are they here? This presentation will look at the root causes of the current situation, as well as the current laws and policies affecting asylum-seekers both at our border and in country. We will also look at the greatest needs of asylum-seekers and how social workers can be of service in meeting the needs of those in our area.

OBJECTIVES:

1) Be able to define an asylum-seeker and how they are distinctive from other types of immigrants.
2) Be able to identify the unique challenges that asylum-seekers face and how that influences how they present for services.
3) Be able to think about how to adapt or create services that address the needs of asylum-seekers in our area.
