Congratulations 2017 Award Winners!

Thank you to all who attended our 2017 Annual Conference & Awards event on Friday, October 20th at the Desert Willow Conference Center in Phoenix. We hope you enjoyed the time networking, learning, and honoring our award winners Sara Aleman, PhD (Lifetime Achievement), Deborah Fresquez (Citizen of the Year), and Kristin Lindberg, LCSW (Social Worker of the Year). Monthly Networking Meetings

FlagstaffNetworking: Saturday meeting in December (1.5 CEUs): The next networking meeting will be Saturday, December 2nd, 12:30 PM at the Flagstaff Library. This month's topic is: "What has your Attention? Leading your life with Intentionality!" Space is limited; register to attend!

PrescottNetworking: Second Wednesday of each Month beginning January (1 CEU): Networking Meeting with Prescott and surrounding area social workers. We will not feature a meeting in December but will be back in January -- location TBA!

Phoenix Networking: Third Thursday of each Month (1 CEU): Join NASWAZ Branch 1 for a networking and an educational meeting at Coco's Bakery Restaurant in Phoenix 1 CEU offered at most events with events planned for 2017. Register to let us know you'll attend and we'll save you a seat!

Sierra VistaNetworking: Fourth Thursday of each Month beginning January (1 CEU): Sierra Vista Network Brown Bag Lunch Meetings occur the fourth Thursday of each Month, except for November and December due to the holidays. Mark your calendars in 2018 when we start up again!


An Hour with Private Practice: Questions & Answers

An Hour With Private Practice: Questions & Answers (HOPP) is a free question and answer session for NASW members which is held every third Wednesday of the month from January through November 2017.
The monthly call-in sessions focus on a specific private practice subject. There is no registration and members can join in the discussion, ask questions, and make comments. These sessions provide members with important clinical social work updates impacting the delivery of mental health services.
HOPP is held every third Wednesday of the month from noon until 1:00 pm ET. No session is held in December due to the holidays.

Installment Payments Now Available for NASW Renewals!

You now may pay your NASW membership renewal in two or three installments by your membership renewal date. Installment payments may be made by mail to PO Box 79949, Baltimore, MD 21279-0949 or by phone to NASW Member Services at 800-742-4089 from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. ET Monday-Friday. The installment option is not available online at this time. A $25 processing fee will be assessed for refunds of incomplete installment payments. For more info, click here:

Public Policy & Regulatory Updates for Arizona

Public Policy Committee Updates

The NASWAZ Public Policy Committee planned "Social Work Day at the Legislature" series of events this Spring (January and February). The schedule and dates were created to help professionals and students attend. Dates and details released soon. Plan for February 2018!
NASWAZ Updates

At our Conference this year, we distributed a public policy survey. Please complete the survey to help inform our efforts this year -- we want to hear from you! Click here for the survey (complete by December 15th).


The Board of Behavioral Health Examiners will host a meeting on November 15th to discuss a Clinical Supervision Trainer meeting. Old and new rules, including the tutorial, documentation, and exemptions will be outlined. The Chapter will share the results with membership in future newsletters/communications.

A reminder: The BBHE administrative office and meeting space will relocate from the Central/Osborn location to 1740 West Adams St, Phoenix, AZ 85007 during the week of December 18th. Please watch for updates as they are made available.

Arizona LTC Task Force Monthly Social Work Conference Call

Attention social workers and social service staff that work in long term care: You are invited to participate in a long term care social work task force monthly conference call on the2nd Thursday every month at12:30 PM. The Arizona Long Term Care Social Work Task Force is offering aFREEmonthly conference call for all social workers and social service staff. Relevant and challenging issues are discussed in an interactive, roundtable-style forum with other social work peers. The conference call is held the second Thursday of every month and is facilitated by a member of the Social Work Task Force. Participants can ask questions, present cases or just listen in on the discussion. This is a wonderful learning and networking opportunity to ask those tough questions about issues in the nursing home as well as share ideas and resources with each other.

The Office of Ethics and Professional Review (OEPR) provides individual ethics consultations as a benefit of NASW membership. Ethic consultations are a resource for members who encounter ethical dilemmas and/or have ethics related questions. Consultation services are intended to guide members through the applicable standards in the Code along with other pertinent considerations and resources that address their concerns and allows them to make reasoned ethical decisions. While we can discuss ethical issues, we cannot provide definitive answers for a particular situation or make decisions for members.
Ethics consultation telephone calls are answered on a first come first served basis and are not pre-scheduled. If you call during consultation hours and receive a voice-mail response, we request your patience as we complete earlier member calls, Please leave a brief message clearly stating your name and contact number and we will return your call. Due to the high call volume, we ask that you allow 24 hours for a return call.

Practice Perspectives

Integrated Behavioral Health

For your information, the following link is to a new practice perspectives, “Integrated Behavioral Health Services in a Primary Care Setting: A Role for Private Practitioners” This document discusses integrated behavioral health services implemented by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services in 2017. Although fees are bundled in primary care settings, there is also a way for clinical social workers to receive reimbursement.

2018 PQRS Negative Payment Adjustment

Practice alert, “2018 PQRS Negative Payment Adjustment.” Clinical social workers in private practice who are Medicare providers may receive a letter from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services if they did not report PQRS 2016 measures appropriately. The letter informs clinical social workers of a two percent penalty in Medicare reimbursement beginning January 1, 2018. NASW encourages its members to file an informal review if they believe their feedback report reveals the negative payment adjustment may have been applied in error. An informal review must be filed no later than December 1, 2017.
